Restored Eickhorn Prince Eugen Pattern Field Marshal Sword

This pattern is absolutely a favorite of collectors. Nice 32" plated blade rates NM. The came in here with shipping damage. It was definitely worth the restoration though. The blade is stamped with the mid period Eickhorn mark. The buffer is lost to time. There is a stain a couple inches up from the tip. The black enamel painted scabbard is dent free and has good paint with wear and a few scuffs towards the drag. The throat fitting is missing, the insides are all there to include the runners. This very distinctive hilt is made of gilt zinc, don't bother looking for a brass based example, they were never made in brass! Look at that evil looking bird on the crossguard, now compare it to the 4th pattern Army dagger or even the TENO! Obviously Designed by the famous Casberg, their artist had a love of this eagle! Much gilding is worn or polished from the hilt. The back strap was broken and this was reassembled and you can see the crack. The black celluloid over wood grip has a chips toward the pommel I clearly show. the ferule is a replacement that is NOT correct for this model. I put a portepee on this so you would not know unless you go looking. This example is illustrated in Angolia's reference pg 82/83. There is also another pic of it in Angolia's reference. The end of the crossguard terminates with a swirl. Both the back-strap and the knuckle bow are ornately decorated. Check out the pommel eagle!! Certainly one of the most desirable of all Eickhorn Patterns. The sword is Carl Eickhorn’s Prinz Eugen Model 1765 It was introduced in August 1939, as a part of Eichorn’s Field Marshal series. Wittmann writes about this model specifying that “… it was also easy to assume this must have been an SS version, certainly carried by members of the Waffen-SS division Prinz Eugen.” (p.339). John Angolia also features in “Swords of Hitler’s Third Reich” an SS officer wearing a Prinz Eugen Sword stating: “Most probably officers of the SS Division Prinz Eugen gained permission for their officers to officially wear the sword pattern ‘Prinz Eugen’ as it lauded the name of the Divisions’ namesake.” This point was recently supported by this example.
