Cased J2 - Frontflugspange Für Aufklärer, Seenotflieger-Verbände und Wetter-Erkundungs Staffeln in Gold by C. E. Juncker of Berlin. Instituted January 30, 1941, the Clasp for Reconnaissance, Air/Sea Rescue and Meteorological Squadrons in Gold was awarded for specialized squadrons upon the completion of 110 combat missions. It is constructed out of two pieces of die struck / stamped tombak / nickel-silver that has been gold gilded / chemically blackened has polished highlights and is all covered in a protective lacquer coating. The obverse depicts a centrally placed blackened eagle head that is surrounded by a laurel leaf and berry wreath that is tied together at the bottom with a stagnant swastika and is flanked by four round cut outs and two nine-piece oak leaf clusters. The fullback reverse shows an off-center rivet, a soldered-on tombak round wire catch, soldered on tombak barrel hinge and sturdy tapered tombak pin. It displays wonderful detail throughout; the blackened eagle head is a perfect contrast to the gilded highlights. It measures 3 inches wide by 1 inch tall. The award comes housed in its appropriate case. The case is constructed out of wood and pressed cardboard that is covered in a blue simulated grained leather covering. The top reads, in gold foil Gothic style script: “Frontflugspange für Aufklärer gold”. The steel piano hinge and press button are lightly oxidized and continue to work well. The case measures 3 ½ inches wide by 1 5/8 inches deep by 3/4 of an inch thick. A great piece.
