A Verdienstauszeichnung für Ostvölker 1. Klasse in Gold im Etui by 100 - Rudolf Wächtler & Lange of Mittweida. Instituted July 14, 1942, the Eastern Peoples valor and merit badge was awarded to members of the Eastern peoples who served in the service of the Wehrmacht and excelled in exemplary duty. It is constructed out of a die struck, zinc base that has been gold gilded. The obverse depicts a centrally placed six pedal flower that is surrounded by a laurel leaf wreath that is encircled by a rope pattern, in front of two crossed broad swords and a sunburst pattern. The semi-hollow reverse features the correct; soldered-on tombak block hinge, soldered-on oval plate flatwire catch and tombak coke bottle pin. The underside of the pin is maker marked: “100”. It measures approximately 1 15/16 inches wide and tall. The award comes housed in is appropriate issue case. The case is constructed out of a wood and pressed cardboard base that is covered in a simulated grained black faux leatherette. To the front is a round steel gilded spring-loaded push button. To the back is a plated steel, staggered, piano hinge. Both continue to work well. To the very top is a pressed gold foil 1st Class Ostvolk award with swords. The interior-bottom of the case is constructed out of a pressed cardboard base that is covered in a black velvet material that outlines a pin, hinge and catch assembly. The interior top lid is covered in a pearl satin above a pad. There is in excellent condition with only minor wear to the one corner. The case measures approximately 2 11/16 inches wide and deep and 1 inch thick. A wonderful complete piece!
