Imperial 2nd Class Iron Cross & Kyffhäuser Medal Bar
German Empire, Imperial - Two-Piece Medal Bar. Assembled sometime around late-1921 for a WWI German soldier who performed a single act of bravery in combat and to recognize their meritorious service behind the lines. From left to right are:
- 2nd Class Iron Cross 1914 by “W&S” - Wagner & Sohn of Berlin (Eisernes Kreuz II. Klasse 1914, reinstituted August 5, 1914).
- Kyffhäuser War Commemorative Medal (Kyffhäuser-Denkmünze für 1914/18 mit Schwerter, instituted June 18, 1921).
Both awards are attached with a prong each to the reverse of a die stamped tombak sheet metal base that is covered to the front with the appropriate rayon ribbon. The Kyffhäuser War Commemorative Medal ribbon has a pinned-on two crossed broad swords combatant emblem. The reverse hinge and pin are lost to time. It measures 3 inches wide by 3 1/4 inches tall.
