Bavaria - Two-Piece Medal Bar

German Empire, Kingdom of Bavaria, WWI - Two-Piece Medal Bar. Assembled, sometime around late-1914, for a Bavarian, front line, combatant soldier who demonstrated military merit and fought bravely in the Great War. From left to right:

  • 2nd Class Iron Cross 1914 by “CD 800” - Carl Dillenius of Pforzheim, 800 silver (Eisernes Kreuz II. Klasse 1914, reinstituted August 5, 1914).
  • 3rd Class Military Merit Cross with Swords (Bayern Militärverdienstkreuz 3. Klasse mit Schwertern, instituted December 22, 1913).
The bar consists of a stamped alloy sheet metal base, that is covered to the front with each medal’s appropriate rayon ribbon and to the back with a royal purple wool cloth, assembled with black stitching. The reverse also shows, in tombak, the appropriate: medal keepers, round wire pin, hinge and catch assembly. They all remain in well working condition. It measures 2 15/16 inches wide by 3 9/16 inches tall. A great piece!
