Free State of Württemberg, c.1920-34 - Feuerwehr-Ehrenzeichen 25 Jahre. Instituted in 1920, the Württemberg Free State Fire Service Medal was awarded for 25 years of continuous and unchallenged service. It is constructed out of a die stamped bronze base that has been bronze washed. The oval shaped obverse features an early style fire helmet in front a ladder and a crossed axe and pickaxe, this is all surrounded by a laurel leaf and berry wreath and “Für 25 Jährige Dienstzeit” with three five-dot flowers to the top. The reverse reads: “Für 25 Jährige Dienstzeit” has a five-dot flower and “W. Mayer – FR. Wilhelm” to the base. There is a soldered-on loop to the reverse-top which holds a ring. Through the loop is a stamped brass and gilded medal bar that is covered in a black and red ribbon. The reverse shows a well-working pin, hinge and catch assembly. The medal measures 1 ½ inches in diameter. The award comes housed in its appropriate issue case. The case is constructed out of a wood and pressed cardboard base that is covered in a red leatherette. The top features, in pressed gold foil: “Ehrenzeichen” arched above the Württemberg Coat of Arms, above: “für 25 Jähr. Dienstzeit in der Feuerwehr.”. The press button and hinge work well. It measures 2 ¼ inches wide by 3 ¾ inches deep by 5/8 of an inch thick.
