A Model 1933 Schutzstaffel Dienstdolch by F&A Helbig of Steinbach – SS Contract Code RZM 1163/38 SS - 1938. The blade on this one looks decent. The acid etched “Meine Ehre Heißt Treue” motto and “Gaefler F. & A. Helbig Steinbach Kr.M.” maker mark are both faintly executed-as is textbook construction for Helbig. The blade is nicely seated up against the hilt. The tip comes to a perfect point. The crossgrain is easily visible as you shine it in the light. The blade rates Exc+/Exc++. It shows age grey and runner marks/scratches throughout. The steel based black painted scabbard looks great. It continues to remain completely dent free and holds 99% of its painted coverage. The steel based plated scabbard fittings look excellent. All four scabbard screws remain intact, the one next opposite the ring is slightly lower, and the ball remains perfectly round. The “fat” crossguards are steel based and plated-again a textbook Helbig feature. The black died hardwood grip looks great. Wonderful graining. It has some cracks and chips chips to some of the edges. The aluminum eagle is noticeably high up on the grip-again textbook for Helbig. The SS roundel retains 99%+ of its enamel and has a perfect fit.
NOTE: These SS Daggers are controversial for some. Others consider them completely original. T. Wittmann speaks to these as original in his SS dagger refence on page 175 and R. Siegert features a similar Steinbach example in his SS reference on page 199. They are “ugly” and all feature the exact same construction. I want you fully informed and IMO they are original.
