Early - Infanterie-Sturmabzeichen in Silber by Schauerte & Höhfeld of Lüdenscheid. Instituted December 20, 1939, the Infantry Assault Badge was awarded to a soldier who had taken part in three assaults since January 1, 1940, had fought in the front lines, had attempted a break-in with a weapon or had been involved in combat operations on three different days. The silver variant was awarded non-motorized infantry divisions and mountain infantry companies. It is constructed out of a die stamped tombak base that has been silver washed. The oval shaped obverse depicts a rifle and bayonet below a Heer closed winged eagle clutching a mobile swastika within its talons. This is all surrounded by an acorn and oak leaf wreath that is tied together at the bottom. The hollow back reverse correctly displays; a soldered-on rectangular wire catch, soldered-on sheet metal hinge and round wire pin. All of the components are non-magnetic and remain in well working condition. It measures 2 7/16 inches tall by 1 7/8 inches wide. A great early variant.
