Instituted April 2, 1963, the Military Office of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Identification Badge was presented to the members of the Joint Chiefs of Staff upon appointment, to the positions of: Service Head, Vice Chairman, or Chairman. It is a multi-piece construction with a gilded brass and a burnished sterling silver base that contains multi-colored enamel work. The round shaped obverse features a centrally placed shield of the United States, on top of four swords, surrounded by a flowing ribbon that reads, in black: “Joint” (top) and “Chiefs of Staff” (bottom) - minor paint loss, which is all surrounded by an olive leaf wreath that has crossed ribbons to the top, bottom and sides. All three clutches remain. It measures 2 1/8 inches in wide by 2 ¼ inches tall. The badge is attached to a piece of red felt covered cardboard with a glued-on tag that reads: “Sterling Silver”. The badge and red felt piece are housed inside the original cellophane window, white and blue cardboard case. One minor tear to the front top left. It measures 4 inches wide by 2 5/8 deep by 13/16 of an inch thick. A very rare example.
