Austro-Hungarian Empire, WWI - Kriegskreuz für Zivilverdienste II. Klasse (Krzyż Wojenny za Zasługi Cywilne II klasy). Instituted August 16, 1915, by Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria, it recognized civilian war service during World War I. The cross could also be awarded to military officers for their contributions to the war but were not directly involved in combat operations. It is constructed out of a multi-piece die-struck tombak that has been gold gilded and includes white enamel work. The obverse features the Emperor’s monogram “FJI” (Franz Joseph Imperator), encircled by: “Merito Civili tempore belli MCMXV” (Civil Merit in Time of War 1915) which is in front of a white pattée style cross which has an intertwined oak leaf and acorn wreath through the arms. The full back reverse features two dome head rivets, is maker marked: “SSW” (within a clover leaf) and marked: “AA”. It also features the appropriate pin, hinge and catch assembly that remains in well working condition. It measures 46mm wide and tall. A beautiful piece.
