Here's one right out of the wood work purchased by me from the Vet's family. It's never been in a collection or taken apart. The blade is a good example with some age grey and runner marks but no sharpening or abuse. Nice crisp motto and 120/34 maker mark. Perfect point with lots of crossgrain remaining. I would rate this blade an Exc+/Exc++. The hilt fittings are early nickel silver with an "I" Roman numeral distribution mark on the reverse. The hilt fits very nice and does have some verdigris. The pommel nut has never been turned. All the angles are correct. The wood grip is in great shape with exception to minor dents and evidence of a couple fine hairlines that you will have to go looking to find. The eagle is a nickel version and has taken a hit at some point that has dented it is some. It was a very long time ago as there is some green verdigris on there. 100% of the enamel is intact to the roundel. The portepee on the chained SS was authorized for wear by officers only. Peek under this one and you will see evidence of where the portepee has discoloured the wood ever so slightly, solid proof that this portepee has been there forever and not just something that someone added to pretty this thing up! The scabbard has a early black paint typical of the earliest SS chained scabbards. The scabbard fittings again are all solid nickel as is the chain. The ball is squashed in. The chain has great burnish to a backgrounds. There is minor wear to the chain and there is evidence that it's been twisted out of shape on some connectors in particular the two lowest ones that appear top be period replacements . We often see this on these type II chains. The details on the chain look great! The correct first upper link is SS marked. I know some guys fret about a maker marked dagger in a chained scabbard and there is no need for concern here. In the period we have evidence that these early scabbards were for sale to guys who became authorized to "upgrade" to a chained scabbard. Guys look at the fits and the matching patina on this piece, it's all been together forever. It's not perfect and I don't clean'em up this is exactly as it came from the family. Very nice original piece.
