nother piece taken from the MAX! The blade on this piece shows light scratches, age grey and spotting throughout. The edges of the blade are also a bit rough. The blade does fit well against the crossguard, the crossgrain is nice, it has a perfect tip along with a nice dark maker mark. The blade rates Exc+. The period repainted scabbard shows oxidization/pitting, mostly to the edges. This think I'm sure was repainted by the NSKK guy himself when the order came down in 1936. He removed the fittings to repaint this and did have trouble replacing them as the top screws were not replaced and the bottom show evidence of being turned. I could retap and replace the top screws but I'm sure that this is how this was returned from Germany so I will leave as is. The fittings have patinaed to a green color over time. The ball has been dented in. The scabbard/crossguard fit is perfect. The solid nickel crossguards have also patinaed quite nicely. There is even wear to the crossguards. The reverse of the lower crossguard is gau stamped "P" (Pommern). The crossguard/grip fit is perfect. The grip is rough with a piece that has been glued back together to the top right side of the roundel. The grip also has three or four small nicks and flakes. The solid eagle is nicely detailed. The roundel retains all of its enamel. An honest piece that fits together nicely and is selling at a modest price.
