SS P.S.S. Bayonet with portepee

What an awesome piece to have! This bayonet is rarely encountered! This is a special Imperial re-issued Third Reich P.S.S. (Polizei Seitengewehr Sonderausfuhrung) bayonet that was modified from the S 98/05. The plated bade on this one tells a fascinating story and is a testament in itself to the abilities on the Polizei armourers of the period! It retains a nice bright finish, has a perfect fit and perfect tip! The stamped ?Weyersburg & Co Solingen? and ?Rich. A. Herder Solingen? marks are beautifully executed! The spine is also stamped with a crown and proof marks ?W 15? indicating 1915 issue originally as a S 98/05 and later extensively reworked to a PSS likely at the Herder factory. The Imperial proof marking were not usually removed during the re-issue process, (see Wheeler's excellent bayonet reference pg 51 and again later at pg 163) The 14 ? inch long blade rates Exc++. It has surface scratches throughout and some very minor plating lifting. The unmodified S98/05 large black anodized scabbard looks great. It retains a dark finish and is completely dent free! It is proof stamped on the throat and ball. The original throat retaining screw remains intact and unturned. The hilt on this is beautiful! The steel plated pommel and crossguards were also modified during the re-issue with acid etched oak leaves and acorns. They retain about 90% of their original plating. The button functions well. The crossguard is also proof stamped. With the re-issue, the imperial flash guard grips were all discarded and hand replaced with stag horn grip plates, which are tightly secured by aluminum rivets. They are both in perfect condition with no cracks, chips or splits. The aluminum police eagle is tightly fit and displays wonderful detail throughout! This piece comes with an RZM and SS stamped black leather frog and portepee! A complete rare piece deserving of your collection! It has been said that this bayonet was attributed to special SS-Polizei units. The portepee is quite correct for this example and can be seen in Wheelers reference on this same bayonet pg 163.
