The F. W. Backhaus GmbH Stahlwarenfabrik company began in 1827 by Friedrich Wilhelm Backhaus. It was originally based in the city of Hilden near Solingen-Ohligs. In 1875, Backhaus was succeeded by; his son Robert, his brother Friedrich Wilhelm, his sister Julie and their Fabrikant Benjamin Graef. Backhaus manufactured combat knives during the First World War. Products listed in 1925 include: knife ware, scissors, and camping, Arkansas and Saladero knives. During the Third Reich era, the firm manufactured HJ knives and SA/NSKK daggers. The earliest daggers were marked with the encircled baby-and-stork trademark. The company received its RZM license in 1935, yet it was revoked on December 10, of that year. The company also made straight razors, after the war. In 1970 the company was located on Kaiser Straße 17.
