Hugo Köller, Solingen

The Hugo Köller Stahlwarenfabrik company began in 1861. It registered with the Solingen chamber of commerce on September 25, 1894. The eagle clasping a straight razor and a table knife in its talons trademark was registered on July 24, 1895. Köller manufactured: cutlery, kitchen knives, hardware, pocket knives, straight razors and scissors. In 1900, Hugo and Walter Köller were listed as owners. Rudolf Köller succeeded Hugo by 1914 and remained as one of the owners until 1930. During WWI, the company manufactured close-combat knives. Walter Köller was then the sole owner from 1930-1939. The company was located on Grünewalder Straße 28 in 1932 and remained there until 1999. During the Third Reich era, Köller manufactured: SA/NSKK daggers, dress bayonets and Hitler Youth knives. By the 1940s the company was marketing: gardening tools, scissors, razors and pocket knives. Later, the company added good-quality viticulture and forestry tools to their offering. By 1989, Köller was purchased by the Hindrichs family. On November 1, 1991, the family also acquired the "Puma-Werk" (Lauterjung & Sohn) company. In 1979, Puma took over Hugo Köller's factory on Grünewalder Straße 28 in 1995. In 1998, Hugo Köller and Puma moved to An den Eichen 20-22, the premises of "Cuno Melcher" (part of the same group). Puma knives continue to be manufactured at that location.
