The J. A. Henckels Stahlwarenfabrik business traces its beginnings back to June 13, 1731, and Johann Peter Henckels the founder of the "Die Zwillinge" company. It began as a manufacturer of: cutlery, tableware and candelabra. The J. A. Henckels family name was introduced by Johann Abraham Henckels (1771-1850), who was succeeded by his son Johann Abraham Henckels (1813-1870). This well-known manufacturer has used the famous twins (Zwilling) mark since its beginning. When trademarks and brand names were being registered in 1895-1904, Henckels protected no fewer than fourteen twin trademark variations. Henckels registered with the Solingen authorities on December 5, 1882. The company became a purveyor to the royal Prussian and Imperial Austrian households. It opened a showroom in Berlin at Jägerstraße 50 before moving to a larger premises at Leipziger Straße 117-18. An American showroom was opened in New York in 1883 and the importation of Henckels knives into the United States was entrusted to Graef & Schmidt. By 1900, ownership had passed to Fritz W. Beckmann and Alfred Wolters. Henckels manufactured many bayonets during the First World War. In 1932, Henckels' Solingen location was on Grünewalder Straße. During the Third Reich era, Henckels made daggers for the Wehrmacht along with some of the highest quality Early era HJ knives and SA daggers. They also made SS daggers under the SS contract code RZM 15/38 SS and RZM 15/39 SS in 1938/39. Henckels was listed as a manufacturer of Hitler Youth knives in both the February and March 1934 editions of Die Klinge. Come 1935, the company was issued the RZM M7/10 code, yet it was withdrawn December 1, 1942. After the war, in 1970, the company was purchased by the "Werhahn Group." From then on, Henckles expanded several times over and into multiple countries worldwide. To this day Henckels remains a well-known worldwide brand and continues to offer many high-quality kitchen: knives, cutlery and cookware.
