The Johann Leupold, Bayerische Messerfabrik, company began in 1873. In the 1900 Deutsches Reichs-Adressbuch für Industrie edition, Leupold was advertising as a specialist in "hunting, table and pocket knives". During the Imperial War, though unmarked, many trench and combat knives were made for the Bavarian army. In 1921, Leupold registered their trademark of: a shield charged with a crossed antler and an arrow-which was also used by the Johanniswerk Stahlwarenfabrik company. In 1925, Leupold was advertising Bavarian: hunting knives, cutlery, pocket knives and butcher knives. Come the Third Reich era, some early era SA daggers were made along with some firemen bayonets. Johann Leupold did not receive an RZM code in 1935. By 1937, it is likely that Johanniswerk and Johann Leupold (potentially also Hermann Leupold) merged together to form the Süddeutscher Messerfabrik GmbH company.
