The Franz Pils & Söhne Messer und Stahlwarenfabrik company traces its beginnings prior to 1922, when an anvil (Amboss) trademark was registered. In 1933, Pils acquired the "Ludwig Werndl's Nachhaben Mach & Dworczak" (1880-1929) factory which closed two years earlier. The company then began to be known as "Pils-Werndl-Werke." Pils was at one point the third largest knife factory in Austria. The company sold: rust-free cutlery, kitchen and industrial knives. After Austria had been annexed by Germany on March 12, 1938, Franz Pils & Söhne was issued the RZM number M7/102. In 1939, the company was owned by Franz and Ludwig Pils. During the Third Reich era, Pils manufactured HJ knives and SA/NSKK daggers. In 1967, the company could no longer compete with Asian imports and went bankrupt with 200 job losses to the community of 2000 inhabitants. The old workshop is now a cultural center.
