The Richard Balke & Söhne, Besteckfabrik, company was founded in 1919. It registered with the Solingen chamber of commerce on May 22, 1920. Balke specialized in hotel cutlery and various pocket/camping knives in its beginnings. 1928 records indicate that the company was owned by: Richard, August and Kurt Balke. Come the Third Reich era, early SA daggers were made-Fisher estimates 2,000. In 1935, Balke did not receive an RZM license. In 1939, the firm was located on Klaubergerstrasse 56. By 1942, solely August and Kurt Balke were owners. The company survived the war and by 2000 they were manufacturing honing steels, kitchen and professional knives, while located on Hossenhauserstrasse 223. Prior to June 24, 2018, the company incorporated as "Richard Balke & Söhne Inh. Karl Höhmann", then "Richard Balke + Söhne Inh. Renate Tillmanns". Its status has since been removed and it is assumed the business is no longer operating.
