The Carl August Meis Taschenmesserfabrik company began in 1872 on Ufergarten in Solingen. It initially specialized in tableware and scissors. Come 1900, other metalware and knives were being made. Meis relocated to Adlerstraße 6 in 1904. In 1917, ownership transferred to Meis' son Carl Gustav Meis (1876-1937) then to his son Carl August Meis (1908-1969) in 1924. Products included: pocket knives, cutlery, promotional knives and metalware. During the Third Reich era, SA/NSKK daggers were also being manufactured. Meis received its RZM license in 1935, yet lost it on January 5, 1938 (where it may have been given to Jacobs & Co.). In 1958, Kurt Gronau joined the company. In 1966, Meis acquired the "Friedrich Olbertz GmbH & Co." firm which also manufactured pocket knives. Sales in Germany were under the name "Carl August Meis" and abroad under "Friedrich Olbertz." In 1999 knives were still being offered.
