Gebrüder Heller, Schmalkalden
The Gebrüder Heller, Bohrerfabrik, company from Schmalkalden in Thuringen, began on March 18, 1849, with drill smith Joh. Georg Heller. It specialized in the manufacturing of: drills/drill bits, pliers and tools. Heller's encircled anchor trademark was registered in 1895. In 1920, the company had 265 employees. In 1928, Heller claimed to have the largest wood drilling factory in all of Germany. Come the Third Reich era, Heller manufactured early SA/NSKK daggers. During WWII, there were two companies trading under the "Gebrüder Heller" name; this one and another from Marienthal-the more common manufacturer who received the RZM M7/50 code. In 1939, there were 609 workers and 141 employees. Heller received the wartime letter-code: 'fdx' in June 1941. Come 1945, Heller was under DDR control. In 1947, the company became the "Vereinigte Schmalkalder Metallwerke" and in 1948 it merged with another company to form the "VEB Ankerwerk" company. In 1949, the Heller trademark was advertising the sale of: drills/drill bits, pliers, tools, riveting machines and rivets. VEB Ankerwerk then merged with "VEB Universalwerk" in 1956 to form the "VEB tool and cutlery factory WEBEFA". With the end of the DDR in 1990, the company was dissolved and the individual companies continued to operate independently. The "Herwig Bohrtechnik" company in Schmalkalden is one of the successor companies to Gebrüder Heller. In Bremen, the former owners founded a new company after the war under the name "Gebr. Heller". In 1976, "Gebrüder Heller Dinklage GmbH" was founded. From 1993 the business activity in Bremen was terminated and the company was concentrated in Dinklage.
