The H. Herder, Stahlwarenfabrik, company traces its beginnings back to February 27, 1727, with Peter Herder. Peter Herder had purchased two cutlery marks: the black and white ace of spades (within borders) from Peter Brtickmann. The borders differentiated a similar maker mark from Friedr. Herder Abr. Sohn. However, H. Herder claims its foundation date in 1806. Herder made: cutlery, tableware, tools, pocket knives, scissors and straight razors. Henriette Herder, inherited the trademarks and registered "H. Herder" on March 16, 1865. She passed it onto her son Liebrecht Morsbach, who also owned Solinger Adressbuch-Verlag, which produced the Deutsches Reichs Adressbuch. Come March 9, 1895, the trademark of the bordered ace of spades was registered. Morsbach owned the company for many years and eventually passed it onto K. Kottejan and Friedrich von Hahn by 1920. The 1932 Deutsches Reichs Adressbuch lists Herder at Schützenstrasse 26b. Come the Third Reich era, early SA/NSKK daggers were made-Fisher estimates 7,000. On January 14, 1939, Herder received its RZM M7/111 license. To date no daggers have been observed with the RZM M7/111 marking. The Kottejan family owned the company by the end of WWII. The company continued making: cutlery, tableware, kitchen, butcher and chef knives, pocket knives, scissors, nail files and razor blades up into the 1990s. Profitability declined, the trademarks were cancelled (c.1996/2005) and in 2002 the business was sold to "El. Herder Inh. Dirk Klinkaus".
