J. Dirlam & Söhne, Solingen

The J. Dirlam & Söhne, Stahlwarenfabrik, company was founded in 1856. It was located on Beethovenstrasse 35 in Solingen-Wald. Dirlam's wax-seal marked "J.D. S.", trademark was registered in 1904. In 1912, the company was advertising the sale of "haberdashery of all kinds", as well as exports to Australia. In 1914, the company was owned by: Julius, Walter and Paul Dirlam. At that time Dirlam was listed as a maker of: knives, scissors and razors. Come 1920 and 1928, Dirlam advertised as being an "Exporter of locally made cutlery and metalware." and as a maker of "Promotional pocket knives, renowned for their quality". Walter was de-listed from the ownership records in 1920, and Walter and Paul Dirlam remained owners until 1939. The 1922 Solingen und sein Industriebezirk full-page advertisement above features some of their products and highlights their exports with showrooms in: London, Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide, Durban, Johannesburg, and Riga. During the Third Reich era, Dirlam manufactured early era SA/NSKK daggers, with their "wax-seal" trademark, along with some fireman official's bayonets and likely dress bayonets. It is likely the company ceased trading in the 1940's.
