The August Bickel, Metallwarenfabrik, company of Steinbach-Hallenberg in Thuringen began in 1884. The company was located on Oberhofer Strasse 47 and the family lived next door. Early on in the company's history Bickel was known for manufacturing quality tools, domestically and for export. In WWI, Bickel made fighting knives marked "AB" From 1920-1939, the company was owned by Bickel's sons: Fritz and Oskar. During the Third Reich era, Bickel made early era SA/NSKK daggers. No other dress daggers are known to have been made and the company did not receive an RZM license in 1935. Bickel had contracts with the Steinbach companies: F & A Helbig and Jacob Kehr-Ritz, to edge, polish and finish their blades. Machine tools were removed to Russia shortly after the war. The company likely ceased trading after the war.
