The August Merten Witwe Eichenlaub GmbH Stahlwarenfabrik company traces its beginnings back to 1910 with its founder August Merten. The company registered with the Solingen authorities on June 30, 1919. After Merten had passed, the business name changed to "August Merten Witwe" (Widow). A 1922 advertisement lists its products as: table and dessert cutlery, carving sets, bread, meat and vegetable knives. In 1934, the company appeared in Die Klinge as a manufacturer of HJ knives. In 1935, the company was located in Solingen-Gräfrath on Brühlstraße 7 and expanded next door to Brühlstraße 7-9 from 1986 to 1998. In 1935, Merten received its RZM code: M7/31. During the Third Reich era, HJ knives and SA/NSKK daggers were manufactured. Merten was also included in the dagger and HJ knife manufacturer list in 1938. After the war, business continued with the son Werner Merten. Stainless steel and silver-plated cutlery, household and sheath knives and gift items were all made during the 1960s. Traditional German (Altdeutsch) cutlery appeared in the 1990s. Come 1998, the Merten family sold their trademark, stocks and tools to the "Robert Herder Windmühlenmesser" company.
