The C. G. Haenel, Waffen- und Fahrradfabrik AG (weapons and bicycle manufactory), company began in Suhl, Thüringen by Carl Gottlieb Haenel in 1840. The company began with a specialization in metal goods for firearms at the suggestion of the Minitry of War. Come 1896, Haenel started producing bicycles. From 1888 to 1917, Haenel manufactured many service bayonets, including: 71/84 (1888), S. 98 (1901-14), S. 98/02 (1903-5), kS. 98 (1913-14) and S. 98/05 (1910-17). These were primarily supplied to the Bavarians and Saxons. During WWI, Hanel manufactured large quantitied of the Mauser Model 98. Haenel registered its arrow trademark on January 15, 1931. During the Third Reich era, Haenel specialized in the manufacturing of: machine guns, rifles, handguns and sold huge quantities of magazines. Haenel manufactured bayonets and many early era SA/NSKK daggers. Come 1935, Haenel did not receive an RZM code. In May 1941, Haenel received its wartime letter-code: 'fxo'. Production ceased in 1945, when the Russians overran Thüringen. Operations recommenced in 1946, under Soviet military direction, but control of the factory was transferred to the government of the German Democratic Republic in 1952. After the unification of Germany in 1991, Haenel became part of the "Suhler Jagd- und Sportwaffen GmbH" company and made: rifles, shotguns and air rifles. The Haenel arrow trademark was re-registered in March 2010. The company continues to trade, under that trademark, to this day with a heavy concentration on assault and hunting rifles.
