Federal Republic of Germany

View as:

The Federal Republic of Germany (FRG or BDR - Bundesrepublik Deutschland), or West Germany, was established on May 23, 1949. After Germany's defeat in World War II, the country was divided among Allied troops. A key item in the occupier's agenda was the denazification of Germany. On July 26, 1957, the Ordensgesetz detailed the treatment and handling procedures of medals, orders and decorations from 1933 to 1945. The FRG then authorized alternative 'de-nazified' replacement awards for qualifying WWII veterans to wear on their Military Streitkräfte Bundeswehr uniforms and in Civilian Wehrverwaltung dress. Production of these awards ceased in 1986 and the country was peacefully reunited on October 3, 1990.
